As I embark on this exciting journey of creating my own play therapy practice, I feel a rush of exhilaration! Leaving Millcreek Counseling at the end of February brings forth a blend of emotions, including anticipation and joy. This transition is more than just a change of scenery; it presents an opportunity for creativity and meaningful relationships in the world of play therapy. My focus will continue to be on children and teens, with the occasional adult joining the mix.

During this transformative period, I want to share both my emotional journey and the practical realities of this significant shift. For everyone who has been part of my story—thank you! Here’s to fresh starts and embracing the exciting rollercoaster of change!

The Joy of Variety in Play Therapy

One of the most rewarding elements of play therapy is the diverse range of clients I have the pleasure of supporting. I primarily work with children and teens, but occasionally, I engage with adults as well. This variety keeps my work dynamic and constantly challenges me to refine my skills as a therapist.

Reflecting on My Journey with Play Therapy

As I navigate this transition, I've found it important to reflect on my past experiences in play therapy. Early in my career, I worked in a private practice with an impressive, fully-stocked playroom. This environment sparked my creativity and allowed me to explore various methods and materials freely.

The playroom was filled with an abundance of resources, from art supplies to imaginative play tools. It played a crucial role in helping many children express their feelings in ways they couldn’t otherwise. Now, as I begin to establish my new practice, I'm motivated to create a similar nurturing environment for my clients, even if it requires starting from scratch.

Preparing for the New Office

While the prospect of building my new practice excites me, I understand that it will take time. To all my clients transitioning with me: I appreciate your patience as I gather the necessary supplies for my new office!

I am creating a welcoming playroom that encourages children and teens to explore their feelings. Each item I select—from cozy seating to imaginative toys—is meant to foster a safe space for self-expression. Recently, I read that therapeutic environments can improve client engagement by up to 50%. This underscores the importance of a thoughtfully curated playroom.

The Lucky Break: Office Furniture

In a fortunate turn of events, I came across an opportunity to acquire office furniture from a nearby play therapy office that is closing. The timing couldn't have been better!

The furniture I obtained is not just functional; it carries a history of positive interactions. Creating a warm and inviting atmosphere is vital, especially for children who might feel nervous about therapy. Incorporating pieces that evoke familiarity feels like a positive sign for this new chapter.

The Importance of Keeping Things Fresh

Transitioning to my private practice also gives me the chance to update my therapy tools and methods continuously. Keeping materials fresh is essential to engage children, whose interests can shift rapidly.

I am committed to exploring new techniques and resources. For example, incorporating mindfulness activities into sessions has gained traction, showing improvements in emotional regulation for many kids. This dedication to ongoing learning ensures I can offer care that is tailored to the unique needs of each client.

Exciting New Directions Ahead

As I prepare for my new practice, I encourage anyone interested in play therapy—parents and fellow counselors—to embrace the opportunities that change brings. Transitions, while sometimes daunting, are powerful moments for growth and exploration.

For parents: if you're considering therapy for your child or looking to continue our work together, I am eager to commence this new journey alongside you! For counselors: let’s support one another through creativity, collaboration, and shared experiences in the evolving field of play therapy.

Heartfelt Gratitude for Your Support

As I reflect on my journey, I want to express my sincere thanks to everyone who has been with me. Leaving Millcreek Counseling is bittersweet, but I am equally excited for what lies ahead. Building my practice will require time and creativity, but I am dedicated to creating a safe and nurturing therapeutic space.
