Exciting news! After months of dedication and growth, I have earned my certification in nature-informed therapy from the Center for Nature-Informed Therapy. This achievement marks a meaningful step in my work as a therapist. deepening my ability to support clients through nature-based approaches. I want to share the journey, what I learned, and how this training enhances my practice.

What Nature-Informed Therapy Means
Nature-informed therapy integrates the healing power of the natural world into therapeutic work. It goes beyond traditional talk therapy by encouraging clients to engage with nature through activities like nature-based play and mindfulness outdoors. This approach supports emotional regulation, creativity, and resilience.
The certification process required me to complete a three-day intensive training followed by a six-month mentorship cohort. This combination of immersive learning and ongoing support helped me understand how to safely and effectively bring nature into therapy sessions.
Highlights from the Intensive Training
The three-day training was a deep dive into the principles and practices of nature-informed therapy. Some key takeaways included:
Understanding the science behind nature’s impact on mental health, including reduced stress and improved mood.
Learning how to design play therapy activities outdoors that encourage exploration and emotional expression.
Techniques for assessing client needs and tailoring nature-based interventions.
Safety considerations and ethical guidelines for outdoor therapy sessions.
The hands-on exercises were especially valuable. For example, we practiced guiding children through sensory walks, using natural materials for creative expression, and facilitating group activities that build social skills in outdoor settings.
The Mentorship Cohort Experience
After the training, the six-month mentorship cohort provided ongoing learning and community support. Meeting regularly with experienced nature-informed therapists allowed me to:
Discuss real cases and challenges in applying nature-based play.
Receive feedback on session plans and therapeutic goals.
Share successes and learn from peers’ experiences.
Stay motivated and accountable in integrating new skills.
This mentorship was crucial for building confidence and refining my approach as a therapist committed to nature-informed therapy.
How This Certification Enhances My Practice
I now offer more diverse and effective options for clients. Here are some ways nature-informed therapy enriches my work:
Engaging children through nature-based play helps them express feelings they might not put into words.
Outdoor sessions provide a calming environment for clients dealing with anxiety or trauma.
Nature activities encourage mindfulness and grounding, useful tools for emotional regulation.
Families appreciate the holistic approach that connects mental health with physical activity and the outdoors.
Why Nature-Informed Therapy Matters in Utah
